Geology

Aogashima is a complex Quaternary volcanic island 3.5 km in length with a maximum width of 2.5 km, formed by the overlapping remnants of at least four submarine calderas. The island is surrounded by very steep rugged cliffs of layered volcanic deposits. The southern coast also rises to a sharp ridge forming one edge of a caldera named Ikenosawa  with a diameter of 1.5 km. The caldera dominates the island, with one point on its southern ridge, Otonbu (大凸部?) with a height of 423 metres (1,388 ft), as the island’s highest point. The caldera is occupied by a secondary cone named Maruyama
Still considered a Class-C active volcano by the Japan Meteorological Agency, the last eruption of Aogashima was during a four-year period from 1781-1785.
History : The history of human settlement on Aogashima is uncertain. Most of the people in Aogashima are Japanese. The island is mentioned in Edo period records kept at Hachijō-jima, which record volcanic activity in 1652, and from 1670-1680. An earthquake swarm in July 1780 was followed by steam rising from the lakes in the Ikenosawa Caldera. Further earthquakes in May 1781 led to an eruption. In April 1783, lava flows from the Maruyama cone resulted in the evacuation of all 63 households on the island. During a massive eruption in 1785, some 130-140 of the population of 327 islanders perished.

Amazing Firefly Squid in Japan

Amazing fire flies….
Location:-
Toyama Bay, Japan

About:-
Of all the bioluminescent life forms in the deep sea, there is one tiny creature who’s light show puts all others to shame. This is the firefly squid, sometimes called the sparkling enope squid. Known to science as Watasenia scintillans, it is referred to in Japan as “hotaru-ika”. It is a member of the cephalopod family and is related to many other squid species throughout the world’s oceans. The firefly squid gets its name from the flashing lights that resemble those of a firefly. This squid is famous for the incredible light show that occurs each year off the coast of Japan as millions of these tiny animals gather to spawn.

The firefly squid is a small member of the squid family, growing to a length of only three inches (seven centimeters). The squid is equipped with special light-producing organs called photophores. These photophores are found on many parts of the squid’s body and emit a deep blue light. Large photophores can be found on the tips of the tentacles as well as around the eyes. Thousands of tiny photophores can be found throughout the squid’s body, giving it the ability to emit light along its entire form. The lights can be flashed in unison or alternated in an endless number of animated patterns. These light shows are thought to serve several functions. They can be used to communicate with potential mates or rivals. They may also be used to disguise the squid’s shape and confuse predators, allowing it to escape. The firefly squid is the only member of the squid family that is believed to have color vision. While most cephalopods have only one visual pigment, firefly squid have three. They also have a double-layered retina in the back of the eye. These adaptations for color vision may have evolved to enable firefly squid to distinguish between ambient light and bioluminescence, and to help them decode the patterns of light created by other members of the species.
The firefly squid is an active predator. It is believed that the squid can use their blue lights to attract prey. By flashing the lights on and off, they can attract small fish and then pounce on them with their powerful tentacles. Firefly squid spend their days at depths of about 1,200 feet (365 meters). At night, they migrate up to the surface to search for food before returning the the darkness below.

Firefly squid…
The spawning season of the firefly squid runs from March to May. During this time, the squid can be seen gathering in large numbers in Toyama Bay in Japan. They gather here by the millions, and sometimes by the billions, to lay their eggs. Once the eggs have been released into the water and fertilized, the adult squid begin to die. This completes the one-year life cycle of the squid. This annual light show is so spectacular that the area where they gather has been designated as a special natural monument. Toyama Bay lies above a deep, v-shaped canyon in which the sea floor drops away suddenly. The flow of the ocean currents usually wells up from the bottom of this canyon and pushes the squid to the surface. Occasionally the squid can be found washed up on the shore in large numbers during a phenomenon referred to by locals as “squid drowning themselves”. This event can cover the shoreline for miles, bathing the beaches in an erie blue glow.

Firefly squid are found throughout the western Pacific Ocean where they can typically be found at depths ranging from 600 to 1,200 feet (182 to 365 meters). This squid is considered a delicacy in Japan and is widely fished there during the spawning season.

Generation of Electricity Using Human Brain

Today’s latest news about science is very interesting. Scintests were trying to generate electricity with humain brain, as they thought it is possible and know after decades of effort, Scientists have devised a way to generate electricity from brain. Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have designed an implantable fuel cell that can generate electricity from a fluid around the brain (cerebrospinal fluid). The result of the experiment was a success since it produced a few hundred microwatts of power from glucose within the cerebrospinal fluid. No adverse physiological effects have been reported so far. This small amount of generated power is of course not enough to run a small fan or any small appliance. But the inventors are not thinking of utilizing this energy to power the appliances. Instead, scientists have planned to make use of this energy in bio-medical field. The amount of electricity produced is enough to power the latest, futuristic and highly efficient brain implants that can help the paralyzed patients to move their limbs.
Elctricity profuction through brain
Human brain_ An Electricity generator…
According to the team leader and computer scientist Rahul Sarpeshkar, the new fuel cells can be a great remedy for paralysis or blindness. Currently, most brain implants are powered through inductive power transfer. The power is transferred either wirelessly or by single use batteries. The major disadvantage of such single use batteries is that they have to be replaced surgically after several years. In comparison, the new fuel cell is made up of platinum (a metal that has good track record of being safe in human body). Moreover, according to Rahul Sarpeshkar the new fuel cell can work for decades with no need of replacement. These new cells will first be tested on humans and animals.
This new fuel cell functions by oxidizing glucose from cerebrospinal fluid at the surface of an activated platinum anode and then converting oxygen to water at the surface of a network of single walled carbon nanotubes embedded in the cathode end of the cell. The fuel cell also utilizes an oxygen gradient to prevent oxygen from reaching the anode and thus possibly creating electro-chemical short circuits. Researchers have also conducted tests to ensure the rate at which cerebrospinal fluid glucose is replenished. The results are satisfactory which means that the method of generating electricity is safe and has no adverse effects. Furthermore, the fuel cell’s oxygen consumption was also checked to make sure that it wouldn’t destabilize oxygen levels in brain.
Though it is still in prototype phase, it sounds promising and efficient. Indeed it would be a great invention to help paralyzed people to live and enjoy life in a better way. Below is a video of how it can be utilized.

Marquam Bridge, Portland

Amazing bridge in portland
Marquam Bridge…
About:-
The Marquam Bridge (/ˈmɑrkəm/) is a double-deck, steel-truss cantilever bridge that carries Interstate 5 traffic across the Willamette River south of downtown Portland, Oregon. It is the busiest bridge in Oregon, carrying 135,900 vehicles a day as of 2008. The upper deck carries northbound traffic; the lower deck carries southbound traffic.

The bridge was designed and built by the Oregon Department of Transportation at a cost of $14 million. The lower southbound deck was opened on October 4, 1966, and the upper northbound deck on October 18, 1966. The main span of the bridge is 440 ft (130 m) long and the two side spans are 301 ft (92 m) each. The vertical clearance of the lower deck is 130 feet (40 m) and the upper deck is 20 feet (6.1 m) above the lower. The bridge is named after Philip Marquam, a state legislator and Multnomah County judge, who owned much of Marquam Hill where Oregon Health & Science University and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center now stand. At the eastern end of the bridge, on the lower deck, is a ramp stub which was intended to connect to the cancelled Mount Hood Freeway. As it has great importance, the Marquam was the first Portland bridge to undergo a seismic retrofit in 1995.
It was built with economy in mind and the public reacted unfavorably to the structure’s aesthetics, including a formal protest from the Portland Arts Commission.[3] (In particular, it blocked the view of downtown from the Union Avenue Viaduct.) This led to public input in the design of the Fremont Bridge. During Mayor Vera Katz’s State of the City address in 2001, she said, “It’s like having the Berlin Wall dividing east and west, with all the subtle charm of the Daytona 500 smack dab in the middle of our city.”

Alsace, France

Alsace, France

About:-
Alsace
(French: Alsace [al.zas] ( listen); Alsatian: ’s Elsass [ˈɛlsɑs]; German: About this sound Elsass (help·info)), pre-1996: Elsaß [ˈɛlzas]; Latin: Alsatia) is the fifth-smallest of the 27 regions of France in land area (8,280 km²), and the smallest in metropolitan France. It is also the seventh-most densely populated region in France and third most densely populated region in metropolitan France, with ca. 220 inhabitants per km² (total population in 2006: 1,815,488; 1 January 2008 estimate: 1,836,000). Alsace is located on France’s eastern border and on the west bank of the upper Rhine adjacent to Germany and Switzerland. The political, economic and cultural capital as well as largest city of Alsace is Strasbourg. Because that city is the seat of dozens of international organizations and bodies, Alsace is politically one of the most important regions in the European Union.

Alsace in France…wholepk.com
The name “Alsace” can be traced to the Old High German Ali-saz or Elisaz, meaning “foreign domain”.[3] An alternative explanation is from a Germanic Ell-sass, meaning “seated on the Ill”,[4] a river in Alsace. The region was part of the Holy Roman Empire, and then was gradually annexed by France in the 17th century, under Louis XIII and Louis XIV, and formalized as one of the provinces of France. The calvinist manufacturing republic of Mulhouse, known as Stadtrepublik Mülhausen, become a part of Alsace after a vote by its citizens on 4 January 1798. Alsace is frequently mentioned with Lorraine, because German possession of parts of these two régions (as the imperial province Alsace-Lorraine, 1871–1918) was contested in the 19th and 20th centuries; France and Germany exchanged control of Alsace four times in 75 years.
The historical language of Alsace is Alsatian, similar to German dialects spoken across the Rhine, but today practically all Alsatians speak French, the official language of France. 43% of the adult population, and 3% of children (3 to 17 years old), stated in 2012 that they speak Alsatian.[5] [6] The place names used in this article are in French. See this list for the German place names.

Colmar, Alsace, France

Roman Alsace:-

In prehistoric times, Alsace was inhabited by nomadic hunters, but by 1500 BC,[citation needed] Celts began to settle in Alsace, clearing and cultivating the land. By 58 BC, the Romans had invaded and established Alsace as a center of viticulture. To protect this highly valued industry, the Romans built fortifications and military camps that evolved into various communities which have been inhabited continuously to the present day. While part of the Roman Empire, Alsace was part of Germania Superior.

Frankish Alsace:-

With the decline of the Roman Empire, Alsace became the territory of the Alemanni. The Alemanni were agricultural people, and their language formed the basis of the modern-day Alsatian dialect. Clovis and the Franks defeated the Alemanni during the 5th century, culminating with the Battle of Tolbiac, and Alsace became part of the Kingdom of Austrasia. Under Clovis’ Merovingian successors the inhabitants were Christianized. Alsace remained under Frankish control until the Frankish realm, following the Oaths of Strasbourg of 842, was formally dissolved in 843 at the Treaty of Verdun; the grandsons of Charlemagne divided the realm into three parts. Alsace formed part of the Middle Francia, which was ruled by the youngest grandson Lothar I. Lothar died early in 855 and his realm was divided into three parts. The part known as Lotharingia, or Lorraine, was given to Lothar’s son. The rest was shared between Lothar’s brothers Charles the Bald (ruler of the West Frankish realm) and Louis the German (ruler of the East Frankish realm). The Kingdom of Lotharingia was short-lived, however; the region that was to become Alsace fell to the Holy Roman Empire as part of the Duchy of Swabia in the Treaty of Meersen in 870.

Alsace within the Holy Roman Empire:-

At about this time the entire region began to fragment into a number of feudal secular and ecclesiastical lordships, a situation which lasted into the 17th century and was a common process in the Empire. Alsace experienced great prosperity during the 12th and 13th centuries under Hohenstaufen emperors. Frederick I set up Alsace as a province (a procuratio, not a provincia) to be ruled by ministeriales, a non-noble class of civil servants. The idea was that such men would be more tractable and less likely to alienate the fief from the crown out of their own greed. The province had a single provincial court (Landgericht) and a central administration with its seat at Hagenau. Frederick II designated the Bishop of Strasbourg to administer Alsace, but the authority of the bishop was challenged by Count Rudolph of Habsburg, who received his rights from Frederick II’s son Conrad IV. Strasbourg began to grow to become the most populous and commercially important town in the region. In 1262, after a long struggle with the ruling bishops, its citizens gained the status of free imperial city. A stop on the Paris-Vienna-Orient trade route, as well as a port on the Rhine route linking southern Germany and Switzerland to the Netherlands, England and Scandinavia, it became the political and economic center of the region. Cities such as Colmar and Hagenau also began to grow in economic importance and gained a kind of autonomy within the “Decapole” or “Dekapolis”, a federation of ten free towns.
The prosperity of Alsace was terminated in the 14th century by a series of harsh winters, bad harvests, and the Black Death. These hardships were blamed on Jews, leading to the pogroms of 1336 and 1339. An additional natural disaster was the Rhine rift earthquake of 1356, one of Europe’s worst which made ruins of Basel. Prosperity returned to Alsace under Habsburg administration during the Renaissance.

Create a Shortcut to Enable/Disable Aero Transparency in Vista

In the interests of exposing all of the secrets in Windows Vista, I’ve decided to explain how to create a shortcut that turns on or off the transparency in Windows Vista. I don’t find this especially useful, but I’m sure it will be relevant to at least one of the readers.
This tip is nothing new, and seems to have been featured on dozens of sites recently, but there seems to be a misunderstanding… this mechanism will not turn off Aero or the compositing engine, it simply disables the transparency.

Manually Enable/Disable Aero Transparency
You can achieve the same result by right-clicking on the Desktop and choosing Personalize and then “Window Color and Appearance”

You should see the “Enable transparency” checkbox in this screen, which works immediately.

How To Copy a DVD or record sounds with VLC 1.0

VLC 1.0 has gotten several cool new features, one of which is the ability to record what is playing in the screen.  Here we will take a look at how easy it is to record a DVD or other video formats using VLC.

Record Using VLC
You won’t see the record button in the default view so we need to make it available in the control panel by going to View and selecting Advanced Controls.
how to use media player advance features
Now you can see the Record button along with a couple other handy controls like snapshot and looping.

recbut
Now when you start up a DVD or other video simply click on the record button and hit is a second time to end the recording.
record watch
While it is recording notice that the record button will be blue.
blue
The recorded video is in MPEG format and stored them in the Documents folder labeled as VLC Record with the date and time.
stored
This is a great way to save entire movies or specific scenes you want to watch later on your hard drive.
